WELCOME TO WOODCREST PE

Hello and welcome to Woodcrest PE!

I am very excited to be a part of the Woodcrest Elementary staff and am looking forward to a fantastic year! Please be sure to check back to this website for updates on all that goes on in the Woodcrest Elementary PE program.

2010 MPS FUN RUN

The purpose of the Fun Run is to stimulate interest in cardio-vascular endurance among students and to provide them with distance experience. The Fun Run will also allow students the opportunity to compete and compare their ability with others their age. The Fun Run is for all 4th and 5th grade students in the Midland Public Schools and Parochial schools.

Length: The Fun Run will be one mile run on the cross-country course at Stratford Woods. All races will begin near the pavilion.

Date: Friday, October 1, 2010. The first race will begin at 4:45 p.m. Stratford Woods City Park is located off Ashman near the US 10 Expressway. There is construction in the area and a detour. Please allow ample time to park.

Order of Races: We will run ahead of schedule when possible.
4:45 p.m. – 5th grade girls
5:00 p.m. - 5th grade boys
5:15 p.m. - 4th grade girls
5:30 p.m. - 4th grade boys

Registration: All students must pick up their nametag in the pavilion before their race. This is our way of correctly identifying students as they cross the finish line. Please be there no later than 15 minutes before the scheduled race. Remember we may run ahead of schedule.

Other important information: Runners should wear comfortable clothes to run in. Please don’t wear a shirt that has your school name on it. No spikes are allowed. You may want to bring a water bottle and snack.

RUN CLUB 2010

Beginning September 13 through October 1, at 7:30 a.m. Woodcrest students will be given the opportunity to enhance their overall fitness by participating in a running program. Students will be encouraged to run at a comfortable pace while working on their cardiovascular fitness. This activity will occur on the soccer practice field where students will run around the perimeter, keeping track of their laps as they run.

At 8:15 a.m., students will then go into the gym to record the distance/mileage they have achieved for the day. Students that decide to participate in this program are allowed to come any day (Monday through Friday) that they choose to attend, however once with the club, they must stay with the group until the group is dismissed to go to class. Students will have the opportunity to monitor their own individual progress. The importance of daily exercise will be stressed. For cardiovascular benefits to occur, students must try to attend on a daily basis.

Please Note: Because of the wet grass, students will more than likely get wet socks and shoes. I would recommend keeping extra dry socks and shoes in the classroom or backpack.

If your child is interested in participating in this program, please return the following permission slip directly to me in the gym or to my mailbox in the main office. I must have their permission slip on file before your child can participate in the run club.

IF IT IS RAINING, RUN CLUB IS CANCELLED FOR THAT DAY.

MEMO TO ALL WOODCREST TRACK MEMBERS

The MPS city-wide elementary track meet will be Tuesday, June 1st.

The track meet starts at 4:30 at the Midland Stadium. Please try to be ready in the stands by 4:15.

Woodcrest is in the BLUE division. Blue division will be doing field events first (high jump, long jump, softball throw). All relays will take place at the end of the meet. When the Red division is finished with running events and the Blue division is finished with the field events, both groups will then switch.

If you are in the high jump and another field event (long jump or softball throw) go to high jump FIRST. Check in with the person running your other field event and let them know you will be doing the high jump first.

You may wear your Woodcrest shirt to school the day of the meet to promote team spirit.

Mrs. Fletcher will have a clipboard and a copy of the events that you have signed up for in the event that you need to double check which events you are in.

All Woodcrest shirts are to be returned before leaving the track meet on Tuesday. Please return your shirt to the shirt bag - see Mrs. Fletcher when you have finished your last track event.

Jersey replacement costs are $35.

Adams will be running a limited concession stand for the meet this year.

There will be a first-aid station located in the infield offered by Mid-Michigan Health.

All ribbons will be handed out by Mrs. LaCourt after the track meet results have been posted. Please do NOT go to the press box for ribbons.

TRACK AND FIELD

This year the city-wide elementary track meet for 4th and 5th grade girls and boys will be held on Tuesday, June 1st at Midland High School. For the month of May, we will be holding track practice on lunch recess every Tuesday and Thursday. Students will practice the long jump, baton exchanges, and work on their overall fitness. Although attendance is not mandatory, it would be helpful for the students to attend as it should improve their overall performance at the track meet.

In addition to the lunch recess practices, we will also have high jump only practice on Wednesday mornings 8:00 until the start of school. Only those students interested in high jump should attend the Wednesday morning practices.
High Jump Practice will take place 8:00-8:35 on May 5, May 12, May 19 and May 26.

Students interested in participating in the high jump practice must have a signed permission slip in order to practice.

FITNESS TESTING

I have begun the President’s Challenge fitness testing program. For those who are not familiar with this program, this is a series of 6 different fitness tests: sit-ups, pull ups, flexibility, shuttle run, distance run (either 400m, 800m, or 1 mile - depending on the student’s grade), and a flexed arm hang. All tests scores are assessed based on national standards and depending on the results of the tests, students can earn either a Presidential fitness award or a National fitness award. I also offer 2 other awards based on the fitness tests. They are the All-But-One Club and the 60 Second Club.

The All-But-One Club is for the student who tests scores are all in the National or Presidential levels, except for 1.

The 60 Second Club is for students who can hold a flexed arm hang for 60 seconds or more. Many students are able to hang for over a minute and I believe that deserves recognition.

FTINESS TEST RE-TESTING AND MAKE-UPS

If students wish to retest or make up sit-ups, flexibility test or shuttle run, I will be running make-ups and re-testing in the gym on Tuesday mornings in the month of May from 7:45 – 8:15.
