TRACK AND FIELD

This year the city-wide elementary track meet for 4th and 5th grade girls and boys will be held on Tuesday, June 1st at Midland High School. For the month of May, we will be holding track practice on lunch recess every Tuesday and Thursday. Students will practice the long jump, baton exchanges, and work on their overall fitness. Although attendance is not mandatory, it would be helpful for the students to attend as it should improve their overall performance at the track meet.

In addition to the lunch recess practices, we will also have high jump only practice on Wednesday mornings 8:00 until the start of school. Only those students interested in high jump should attend the Wednesday morning practices.
High Jump Practice will take place 8:00-8:35 on May 5, May 12, May 19 and May 26.

Students interested in participating in the high jump practice must have a signed permission slip in order to practice.

FITNESS TESTING

I have begun the President’s Challenge fitness testing program. For those who are not familiar with this program, this is a series of 6 different fitness tests: sit-ups, pull ups, flexibility, shuttle run, distance run (either 400m, 800m, or 1 mile - depending on the student’s grade), and a flexed arm hang. All tests scores are assessed based on national standards and depending on the results of the tests, students can earn either a Presidential fitness award or a National fitness award. I also offer 2 other awards based on the fitness tests. They are the All-But-One Club and the 60 Second Club.

The All-But-One Club is for the student who tests scores are all in the National or Presidential levels, except for 1.

The 60 Second Club is for students who can hold a flexed arm hang for 60 seconds or more. Many students are able to hang for over a minute and I believe that deserves recognition.

FTINESS TEST RE-TESTING AND MAKE-UPS

If students wish to retest or make up sit-ups, flexibility test or shuttle run, I will be running make-ups and re-testing in the gym on Tuesday mornings in the month of May from 7:45 – 8:15.

MIGHTY MUSCLES CLUB

We will be having the Mighty Muscles Club on Tuesdays and Thursdays in May on the playground from 8:20 until the start of school. Students interested in earning m&m’s and recognition through pull ups can meet me on the playground at the pull up bars. Any student wishing to re-test pull ups or the flexed arm hang can re-test at that time as well.
Mighty Muscles will be cancelled in the event of rain.
